Tree Ring Laboratory
Tree Ring
Laboratory at the Department of Forestry,
National University of Mongolia established
in 1998 by prof. BAATARBILEG Nachin with
cooperation and support Tree Ring Laboratory
at the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory,
Columbia University in New York.
The main goal
of the Laboratory is to develop Tree Ring
based studies in Mongolia. Main interests
are dendroclimatology, dendroecology and
dendrophyrology. Moreover, since 2003, we
are more focused on working with new field
of science, dendroarchaeology (usage of Tree
Ring methods in archeological science)
collaborating with study of wood anatomy.
Tree-Ring Lab
members are dedicated to expanding the use
application of tree-ring research around the
Mongolia to improve our understanding of
past climate and environmental history.
Current research concentrates on the use of
tree-ring data networks to study regional
climate, global climate teleconnections and
anthropogenic impacts on tree growth.
Exploring tree
species in the local regions, building
collaborations around the world, and
developing new quantitative techniques, the
members are committed to advancing the
sciences of dendrochronology and
paleoclimatology, as well as the ethic of
good science. Tree-ring dating of the
Temples and Monasteries may help find exact
date of Temples and Monastery's history. At
the same time, many historic buildings
preserve construction timbers that were
often cut from the virgin forests. Tree-ring
samples extracted from these early historic
buildings are therefore quite valuable for
the extension of the tree-ring chronologies
derived from living trees further into
prehistory.
